Darwinia+ is an improved Xbox Live Arcade version of Darwinia and Multiwinia. The game occurs entirely within a computer simulation, with graphics evocative of the film Tron. Like Lemmings, the player must create the non-controllable stick-man population (Darwinians) and guide them to safety using various unit kinds and assignable talents. A succession of natural barriers, perils, and the minions of a computer virus rampaging through the server stands in the way. If you leave shards of the virus alive, it will reinfect previously cleansed server regions.
The single-player campaign consists of ten levels, with an extra 49 multiplayer maps. The single-player mode focuses on puzzle-solving and fulfilling particular tasks. In multiplayer, players lead opposing Darwinian armies in a vs. game, similar to a standard RTS. Armies spawn in waves from captured spawn spots and must achieve objectives such as King of the Hill and Capture the Flag. In contrast to the single-player game, the player can select groups of Darwinians and rearrange them. They will attack or capture adjacent foes or points. More power can be earned by elevating commanders to arrange troops into formations or collecting crates that give boosts or single-use assaults (such as airstrikes).
The main differences between Darwinia and the original are in the control systems. In this edition, the user controls combat units directly, directing their fire with the right stick. The left stick controls the cursor, and the right post makes selections. For units left to their own devices, A.I. completes predefined duties. A tutorial has also been created to guide players through the early stages of Darwinia’s operation.
