The government of an unnamed African country has crumbled, and the entire country has descended into civil war, with the two core forces, UFLL (United Front for Liberation and Labour) and APR (Alliance for Popular Resistance), leading the charge. Those who could not flee the country have taken refuge in their homes, as death rules the streets. But, as horrible as it has been, shipments of new weapons are now entering the country despite a weapons ban. The player is sent into the country to find and eliminate the perpetrator. For years, he has successfully hid from government agencies under the alias “The Jackal.” Unfortunately, the player becomes infected with malaria shortly after entering the nation. He is now fighting two opponents at the same time.
The game places the player in a 50-square-kilometer territory where he can do whatever he likes as long as he finds and kills “The Jackal” and survives the disease. But to do so, he needs weapons, trucks, and, most critically, malaria medications. To obtain all this, he receives assignments from various factions and NPCs worldwide, such as escorting a weapons shipment or killing the head of police, which enhance his reputation (access to better gear and missions) and gain the game’s lone currency: diamonds. Although the environment can be freely explored, taking out specific foes or visiting specific locations is frequently only meaningful after the appropriate mission has been triggered.
Weapons can be obtained from dead adversaries, but they are in poor shape and may jam when the player least expects it. The gun will be destroyed if it is too severely damaged. Each of the four weapon categories can only be carried by the player once. Vehicles sustain damage and eventually stop working. However, they can be repaired at any time by the player. If no transportation is available to move across the land, the player can simply go to one of the many bus stations in the area to avoid being assaulted.
On his shooting spree across the country, the player is not alone. Other mercenaries prowl the bars and lands; if the player helps them, they will assist him in his objectives by providing him tips for the present assignment, fighting with him, or broadening the scope of the current operation to enhance the overall payout. These friends are constantly waiting in one of the several safe-houses that can be unlocked by defeating foes. They also store ammo, save the game, and fast-forward to a specific time of day.
In addition to the single-player narrative, the game includes a multiplayer option for up to 16 players in Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond (a Capture the Flag variant), and Insurgence. In Insurgence, two teams compete for map capture points. Once a unit possesses all issues, the opponent captain can be killed to end the round. Each game mode also employs a class-based structure, with six classes, sharpshooter or rebel (using weapons like the flamethrower), and varied weapon load-outs for each.
Except for the save system, the other versions, including the editor, are similar. The game can be saved anytime in the Windows version, although the console versions urge you to keep it at checkpoints.
