Lips is a singing game similar to Sony’s SingStar series. Players sing along to the lyrics of songs presented on-screen, identical to the popular pastime of karaoke. The game also evaluates your pitch, awarding points based on how properly you sing. Players are urged to perform actions with the microphone (such as tilting it upwards) at specific intervals throughout the game. This activates the ‘Star Stream’ bonus mode, which rewards even more points.
Lips are available in Solo, VS, and Co-Op modes. A second player can start a multiplayer game by shaking their wireless mike at any point during solo play. In VS mode, players compete for the highest score; in Co-Op, players work together to attain a high score. In co-op, if both players activate Star Stream simultaneously, their star bonuses are doubled.
There are other game modes for people who wish to try something new: in Kiss, the on-screen couple gets closer together as both players sing better. You’ll be encouraged to tilt your microphones when they come close enough to kiss. At the song’s start, Time Bomb ignites a bomb’s fuse. By singing well, you will fill a glass with water, which you may use to extinguish the fuse.
Players who do not wish to sing may still join by acting as a Noise Maker with a controller. This enables users to add sound effects to the music, such as snapping fingers, cowbells, tambourines, and even crowd noise.
