The sport of golf is recreated in detail in the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 video game. Compared to the version from 2008, this game is missing various playing options, including an online multiplayer component. The traditional PGA Tour career mode and the EA Sports Cup are all left, and the latter includes playing on courses that are only three holes long.
Players earn experience and skill points when they participate in competitions and achieve their goals. These can be put toward leveling up their character and increasing their capabilities. The player can select either the two-click controls or the True Swing controls. With the former, the player must click two or three times at the appropriate intervals to set the hit circumstances. In contrast, with the latter, the player uses the analog stick to imitate the hitting movement. There are a total of twenty-seven licensed players and twenty different courses.
