Orange Star and Blue Moon are two neighboring countries that have a harmonious relationship and always help each other to develop altogether. But then, a terrible thing happened when the Blue Moon shogun retired, and Olaf is the one that took over. He is a wicked and greedy person that has always wanted to invade Orange Star to expand the territory, and furthermore, dominates all of the four neighboring countries. Shortly after that, the war began. Olaf’s army seems to be well-prepared in terms of power and supplies. The player is a military advisor of one of the 4 in danger nations, who is going to fulfill the missions against all enemies to bring peace and safety to all citizens.

Advance Wars is a military-themed strategy and simulation game. As a military advisor of the Orange Star, the player needs to do everything to protect their country, against the enemies who are planning to dominate. The game begins with a training mode, which is the foundation for the participation in the later campaign mode that carries the story of the game. In which, the system will guide players in many military training exercises such as organizing tactics, deploying and developing forces of units as well as moving and navigating battles. There are over 14 different missions provided to practice.

Moreover, players can even connect with four other friends to compete altogether. Once you have equipped yourself with the necessary skills and knowledge, join the “Campaign” and “War Room” modes to fight for world rankings. The system will rely on the strength, tactics, and speed of the player to score the most exact evaluable points. Each battle takes place with the participation of 2 to 4 armies. In turn, the player will command his army to perform one of the actions: attack the enemy, occupy a base (port, airport, or city), or move to a location somewhere on the grid map. Depending on terrains and units, the effectiveness of the battle will vary, and the winnable possibility is mostly based on the player’s strategies.

The game has 18 unique soldiers units with different strengths and weaknesses to be utilized. Each group has each individual combat ability, which is characterized by strength, defense, and range of movement. Some also play different roles as a transport or support unit in the war. However, they do have one thing in common, which is all affected by terrain. With maps such as ports, roads, or plains, the ground terrain will be flat; meanwhile, with forests, mountains, or cities, there will be a much-hidden view.
