The entire world is engulfed in a poisonous vapor. Everyone who comes into contact with it will perish. However, humans have learned to develop technology that will assist them in protecting themselves from lethal moisture. Crystals’ light shines in both small villages and large cities. However, those protective Crystals must be refilled with the purifying Mana Water every year, or their energy will be extinguished. Every year, villages send four young people to find the Mana Water, hidden deep within dungeons and dangerous caves.

Does this sound like the plot of the first Final Fantasy? The story of this first Final Fantasy game for a Nintendo console since Final Fantasy VI harkens back to the series” origins, but the gameplay has evolved significantly. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is a Zelda-style action RPG. The player begins the game by selecting one of four available character classes: magical Yukes, thief-like Selkies, gentle-natured Clavats, and cute little Lilties. The game can be played solo with the chosen character or three others using the GBA-GC connection link, each controlling their personality.

Each character has armor and a weapon, which can be replaced by crafting a new one in towns with the appropriate items. Artifacts found in each monster-filled area raise statistic points until the end of the site, and one relic can be kept after completion to raise that stat permanently. In a multiplayer game, players are given secret objectives to complete, and by doing so, they can claim first dibs on artifacts at the end of the area. Spells can also be found in combat areas but cannot be removed. Bits placed next to each other in the quick select list or cast close together in a multiplayer game will merge and become a more powerful spell. Finally, in single-player mode, a moogle will hold the “bucket” that pushes the toxic vapor away from the party. Still, in multiplayer mode, one of the players will be assigned this common task.
