Madden NFL 2005 is the latest installment in the Madden series. Aside from the usual roster changes, the primary gameplay changes in this iteration focus on defensive play. There are also additions and alterations to the franchise mode and online modes, as well as other additions and changes.

Introducing the Hit Stick, which allows precise and context-sensitive tackling via the second analog stick, is one of the most significant changes to defensive play. Defensive playmaker control (allowing for on-the-fly position changes) and defensive hot routes are now available. The offense has also been expanded to allow for formation changes on the line.

The franchise mode now includes the Storyline Central option, which provides for Tony Bruno’s “EA Sports Radio” show, news and reports about games and the league, interviews with players, and fan call-ins. There are also newspaper articles (from licensed papers across the United States), emails from players and coaches, and other content. All of this is accessible via a redesigned interface that resembles a PDA. Another new feature is player morale, which changes throughout the season depending on their contracts, win-loss record, being benched, and other factors. The draft system has also been revised, and drafting new players can impact existing players’ morale.

Another new feature is Create-A-Fan, which allows players to create fans with an editor, have them dress up in ridiculous costumes, and then watch them sit in the stadium during a game.

This year’s edition is the first to include online play for the Xbox via Xbox Live and online league play on both the PS2 and Xbox for the first time.
