The first game in the long-running Dragon Quest series to be released on the Wii is an “on rails” shooter that uses the Wii Remote as a sword and a shield. The action takes place in the fictional country of Avalonia.
The game’s main character is a young man for whom the player can choose a name. He is sixteen and ready to undergo the Walk of the Worthy, a rite of passage into adulthood.
The player’s character is the son of Claymore, a hero who sacrificed his right arm to aid in the defeat of a powerful foe who posed a threat to Avalonia. Fleurette and Alance are other characters present throughout the quest and offer the player assistance. It just so happens that all three non-player characters have names related to bladed weapons.
The player determines the amount of participation, primarily through the frequency with which they perform spells. The player is limited to using only the regular physical assaults and a special attack called “Master Stroke” when their power meter is at its maximum.
The gameplay is that of a traditional Rail Shooter, with the monsters always arriving in the exact locations throughout the game.
