In another adventure, Mario must travel to new worlds and heights to rescue Princess Peach. Princess Peach has extended an invitation to Mario to join in the festivities that will be held in the Mushroom Kingdom to commemorate the appearance of a comet that only comes around once every hundred years. Just as Mario is about to arrive, Bowser and his henchmen launch an assault on the kingdom and abduct the Princess… along with her entire castle. Mario gives chase, but he loses track of the ship as it exits the atmosphere and finds up on a space station created on the visiting comet under the supervision of the enigmatic Rosalina. It is up to Mario to explore uncharted galaxies, track down the elusive Power Stars, and return his buddies safely to their world.
The gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy is very similar to that of Super Mario 64. In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario explores his latest 3D universe by defying gravity, traveling across various terrains, and even running upside down across planet surfaces. Mario must travel from planet to planet, collecting Star Bits and coins by employing his standard jump attacks and spins, which are now controlled by movement on the Wii Remote controller. A second player can take control of the Wii Remote and utilize it to collect Star Bits that are located in areas that are inaccessible to them.
In addition, Mario will be able to locate new outfits for him to wear (very much like in Super Mario Bros. 3) that will allow him to transform into characters such as the spooky Boo Mario, the soaring Bee Mario, the fiery Fire Mario, and the icy Ice Mario, who will allow him to skate across frozen lakes. In his quest to obtain all 120 stars, Mario will face new hurdles such as ray surfing, balancing on a high-speed ball, floating inside bubbles, and other problems. Even Luigi participates in the search and provides helpful information along the way, which adds to the excitement of the trip.
Players can take a picture of the worlds they’ve conquered and their best record times and send it to their friends over Wi-Fi. Players can also share their best record times with their friends.
