Brave is a young indigenous boy who lives in the wild. Because he aspires to be a warrior, the ancient shaman Grey Bear plans a trip and conceals carvings to bestow his new abilities. However, Hamlet is ruthlessly attacked by the demonic beast Wendigo during the search. Brave is the only one who can stop it, but first, he must track down the strange shaman Spirit Dancer, learn about his background, and find a way to defeat the evil power.

Brave is a puzzle-filled 3D third-person platformer. Brave can walk freely through worlds with varied themes (ice world, volcano world, wastelands, forest…), but certain areas are only accessible after completing quests. The youngster can hop, duck, climb, and perform basic offensive skills. A first-person view is available while viewing, for certain activities, and when utilizing ranged weapons. Throughout the quest, Brave gains new talents that allow him to follow creatures by smell or traces, replicate animal sounds to attract or distract them, summon creatures, or invoke shaman powers to transform into an animal (an eagle, a bear, a bunny, or even a skunk)—killing animals or destroying plants results in the acquisition of health. Brave can also collect up to five eagle feathers, which allow him to stock up on shaman power, which grants temporary greater strength.

The exploration gameplay has been blended with action sections in which you paddle through river rapids or battle while riding a buffalo or an eagle. There is a high emphasis on movement and platform jumping, and the difficulty level is customizable, as evidenced by the number of instructions Grey Bear delivers via a “mobile stone.” Aside from abilities, many weapons can be found, such as spears, tomahawks, and arrows. Brave can also look for secret totems that reveal concept art in the menu.
