Operation Cobra was a World War II operation. United States Army General Omar Bradley planned to break out from the Normandy area after the D-Day landings the previous month. The third primary Call of Duty game centered around this operation, which took place in Normandy, France. During the 88 days leading up to the liberation of Paris, you take on the role of four different allied sides as American, Canadian, British, and Polish soldiers across 14 chronological single-player missions. Surprisingly, you cannot take control of the French 2nd Armored Division, which was responsible for freeing Paris.

The conflicts are typically very theatrical, with multiple fights and programmed events happening simultaneously, consisting of infantry and vehicles, and taking place in environments that can be partially destroyed. In the meanwhile, there are cinematics that explain what has happened. A number of the game’s gameplay mechanics have been preserved or made a comeback, including a mild auto-aim feature, a damage system that lets you recover health if you hide for a moment, and smoke grenades. The option to throw back unexploded grenades is one of the new features, as is the requirement that certain activities be completed by pressing a specific sequence of buttons in the correct order. It is possible to accomplish this feat during hand-to-hand combat by ripping the weapon out of the hands of the opponent soldier. The adversaries collaborate in groups, experiment with various strategies, and look for hiding places.

The primary multiplayer game types include the basic deathmatch (fight), the team deathmatch (team combat), capture the flag (with either two flags or two sides aiming to control a single, neutral flag), and headquarters (where two sides either defend or attack a structure and players can now respawn after being killed). The new mode, War, plays out very similarly to the gameplay of previous installments in the Battlefield franchise. Each of the two teams begins the match with two control points, and a neutral flag is placed in the middle. The goal is to take control of all five flags at once.

Various multiplayer classes include Rifleman, Heavy Assault, Light Assault, Medic, Scout, Support, and Anti-Armor. There are also multiple-occupancy vehicles, such as the Sherman Tank, the Panzer IV, the Jeep, the Horch, the BMW, and the Harley. Each class has unique powers. A conventional rank system exists throughout a single game, allowing your abilities to grow if you perform well. In addition, there is a TrueSkill rating that considers your performance across all competitions. Also, unlike the previous games, your squad will not immediately be returned to the lobby after a match. Instead, they will remain grouped as they were before the game.
