Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is an action role-playing game (RPG) in medieval Japan around the 12th century. The game is played from the third-person perspective. During this ancient period, a family dynasty known as the Heishi used magical means to subjugate most of Japan. These terms allude to mystical stones known as Amahagane, which, when worn, bestow upon their owners a set of superhuman abilities known as Kamui. Yoshitsune is a young man who is not only a samurai but also possesses an Amahagane. He is the protagonist of this epic tale. When the youthful Yoshitsune and the Heishi go looking for more Amahagane stones, they are ambushed by the Heishi. This sets the stage for the beginning of the game. Because they possess the majority of the Amahagane, the Heishi appear to be invincible at that very moment when the destiny of the world is dependent on people who wield these magical stones. The player eventually obtains a second hero, the enormous warrior monk Benkei, who also possesses an Amahagane later in the narrative. Benkei is also in possession of an Amahagane. The plot then centers on the conflicts between these two unlikeliest heroes and the oppressive rule of the Heishi clan.

The gameplay consists of the typical “click and slash” action. The player can take control of Yoshitsune or Benkei in alternating turns, but only one of the two at a time. The use of the Amahagane is the distinguishing feature of this game; it enables the player to deal heavy strikes to the adversary and is especially helpful when facing numerous adversaries at once. When the Amahagane is engaged, adversaries move significantly more slowly; its effect scales directly with the Amahagane’s power. Timing is crucial since the player has to launch their attack at the precise instant the game prompts them to do so; otherwise, the move will be unsuccessful.
