In LEGO form, players can relive the events of the Star Wars prequel movie trilogy (Episodes I, II, and III) through the medium of the video game LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game. Players can assume the roles of any one of more than thirty different characters as they navigate pivotal scenes from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. The plot covers the most significant occurrences in the films, though it may omit or include specific sequences. On the other hand, the portrayal of these happenings is done comically, as all of the people and settings are created out of LEGO bricks. Objects would frequently disassemble in a way analogous to that of LEGO bricks; actors would sport amusing facial expressions, and hand gestures would substitute all of the dialogue from movie events.

The gameplay focuses primarily on action, with some platforming elements and mild puzzle-solving. Players take control of two or more characters as they progress through a series of levels, each standing in for a different film segment. These chapters have to be unlocked in a specific order determined by the story to finish the movie ultimately. Each character type holds a unique set of skills and talents, and different kinds of weapons (blasters, lightsabers, crossbows, and so on) are used by the characters. For instance, Jedi can use force to lift, combine, and destroy objects; robots can unlock encrypted doors; other characters may employ a grappling hook to ascend higher platforms; and so on. The ability to handle a problem can be solved in multiple methods, which means that some of these talents overlap; in most cases, a specific type of character is required to deal with the scenario. In the single-player mode, a player can switch between the many playable characters; in the co-op mode, however, two players take control of at least two unique characters.

In a number of the stages, players will take control of airplanes, engage in combat with hostile vehicles, overcome obstacles, or attempt to destroy ground-based objectives. The Free Mode allows players to replay any of the previously completed levels using any of the characters they have unlocked. This could result in the discovery of locations that were previously inaccessible. During exploration, it is possible to find a variety of collectible goods as well as LEGO studs, which function as currency. When a player’s character is eliminated from the game, the only thing lost is the LEGO studs accumulated up to that point.
