In a fantastical realm, there are beings known as Pengel that function as living fairy paintbrushes and can sketch and bring other beings known as Doodles to life. The game’s main character eventually comes across a Pengel of this kind and attempts to draw a doodle with it. The initial experiments do not turn out very well, and the protagonist quickly discovers that he needs the assistance of a little girl named Zoe and her brother Taro to succeed. Their father, Galileo, was a doodler, which is a term for a painter who works with a pencil. He was considered to be one of the best in the region. However, he was forced to depart because he refused to work for the tyrannical monarch, who exploited the Doodlers’ art for his nefarious ends. To rescue Galileo and dethrone the king, Zoe, Taro, and the hero must compete in a combat tournament and find a means to bring Galileo back.
Combining a “monster-breeding” collecting role-playing game in the vein of Pokémon with a sketching game in the vein of Mario Paint, Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color is a unique experience. Using the Pengel, the player creates Doodles, which subsequently join the party, where they can be trained and engage in turn-based combat against Doodles the hero’s adversaries have drawn.
