In the late 22nd century, humanity began building an orbital elevator that would eventually take them to the surface of the Moon. It was decided to place a Reploid named Lumine in command of the project. Lumine was a member of the new generation of Reploids, which, contrary to popular belief, were incapable of evolving into Mavericks (i.e., becoming hostile toward humans). Lumine was abducted not long after that by individuals who remain a mystery. X, Axl, and Zero make up the Maverick Hunters squad, tasked with tracking down the kidnappers and discovering the motivations behind their actions. Mega Man X8 moves away from the 3D gameplay aspects introduced by its predecessor but retains a visual aesthetic comparable to that of previous Mega Man X games. The player can tackle the stages in whatever order they like, just like in traditional Mega Man games, but at the end of each level, they are required to battle a boss. The player can play three different charaAxl and Zero. Each character has a unique gameplay style, which may be summarized as follows: X can add body parts and armor. Axl specializes in firearms and can hover and glide in the air, while Zero concentrates on close-quarters combat.
