In the sixth installment of the fighting series, based on the engine from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, players are challenged once more to engage in combat to eliminate this new danger. The traditional Arcade, Versus, and Practice game types have all been brought back, and the Krypt has been updated with all-new loot. In addition, there are new modes called Konquest Adventure, Chess Kombat, and Puzzle Kombat, each offering a unique set of minigames for players to enjoy.
Twelve different Mortal Kombat fighters are available for selection when the game begins, and these can range from fan-favorite veterans to enigmatic newbies. Veterans of the original Mortal Kombat games, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion, Kabal, Baraka, Mileena, Ermac, and Nightwolf, are joined by relative newbies as Bo’Rai Cho, who made their debut in Deadly Alliance. Long-time fans of the franchise will recognize these characters as they appear in the game. The game also includes the introduction of nine new fighters with unique combat styles: Ashrah, Dairou, Darrius, Havik, Hotaru, Kira, Shujinko, Onaga, and Kobra. These new characters are meant to counterbalance the previous characters’ more destructive powers.
Both the Playstation 2 and Xbox versions offer the ability to compete against other players online. The GameCube version does not support online play, although it does add Goro and Shao Kahn as playable characters that are not available in any other version.
