The events of Suikoden Tactics take place three years after those detailed in Suikoden IV, making it both a spin-off in the Suikoden series and a direct sequel to Suikoden IV. The novel’s plot focuses on the events following the conflict between the Kooluk and the Island Nations and the mystery surrounding the beginnings of the Rune Cannons. Kyril, the main character, is a mighty young warrior continuing his intense fixation with the Rune Cannons, which he inherited from his father. Kyril’s father was obsessed with learning everything he could about the Rune Cannons.
The previous Suikoden games were action-oriented, but Suikoden Tactics is a tactical role-playing game. Large-scale, tactical combat is the game’s primary focus, and there is no opportunity for exploration; yet, traditional role-playing game aspects such as character development and equipment advancement are also present. The battle system is very similar to that of Fire Emblem. Players have the opportunity to strengthen their alliances with one another throughout the game, which makes for a compelling combination strike. During combat, if two different characters talk to each other, it will boost their fighting compatibility. Most of the gameplay focuses on several talents and spells that may be leveled up and improved. The narrative cutscenes are played with voiceovers and are rendered in real-time.
