In the game before this one, the summoner Joseph was reborn as the god Urath when he brought together all eight rings of summoning. The people of Joseph’s culture held a deep-seated hatred toward the goddess Laharah, who they called the “goddess of death.”
The events of this sequel take place twenty years later in the realms of Halassar, Galdyr, and Munari City, all located in different parts of the earth. You take on the role of Maia, the reincarnation of the goddess Laharah and the mighty Queen of the land of Halassar. In contrast to Joseph’s family, the people of Maia honor Laharah as a benevolent deity who created the world. Maia was born with the mark of prophecy, and her future was already outlined in the Book of Prophecy before she was born. From the very beginning, she has accepted her fate and is aware that to fulfill the prophecy, she must succeed. She does not know the path she needs to take to achieve her goal.
Summoner 2 does away with the combo-based real-time combat of its predecessor and replaces it with a more action-oriented style of gameplay in which the player directly controls the main character’s physical attacks. When a demon is called upon, Maia transforms into that demon and fights with it rather than calling forth creatures to assist her in battle. At any given time, Maia’s party can consist of up to three different individuals, all of whom can have individual AI scripts assigned to them. As the plot develops and Maia’s abilities grow, various new individuals are brought into the narrative. You also have the option to go on an adventure in “solo mode,” in which you leave the other members of your company behind and continue on your own.
