The objective of Super Bust-A-Move 2, carried over from earlier games in the series, is for the player to empty the screen by matching bubbles of the same color. The player accomplishes this goal by shooting a bubble up from the bottom of the screen toward the top and attempting to join it to other bubbles of the same color as it travels. When three or more identical bubbles are on the playing field, those bubbles are removed. Extra points are awarded for popping extra bubbles of different colors altogether. A new row will be unlocked at the top of the screen when a predetermined amount of bubbles have been popped. The game is over when the bubbles on the bottom section of the screen reach a specified line at the bottom of the screen.
There are many different kinds of unique bubbles to choose from. For instance, some behave like explosives, while others color the bubbles they collide within a random pattern. In addition, other game modes are available, including duel mode, single-player puzzle mode, and story mode. In story mode, players can select from various characters, some of whom are concealed. In addition, an edit mode allows the user to design their unique puzzles and share them with their friends.
