The Sentinels, a squad of humanoids, intend to rid the Earth of mutants. To save Forge, the X-Men must ally with their worst foes. The mutants must save Forge before the Sentinels extract knowledge from him that has the potential to harm all mutant-kind.
X-Men: Next Dimension is a fighting game in which the player can select from a roster of up to twenty-four characters. The game has a robust combo system, including standard chains, air juggles, and air launchers. Aside from the fundamental blocking mechanism, characters have a variety of counter-attacks accessible to them, depending on the type of assault the player is countering. In addition to simple assaults, the player can perform super attacks by simultaneously hitting two punch or kick buttons. Blasts or beams, some of which can stun an opponent, and physical assaults with special effects, are examples. There are numerous varieties of super attacks, each with four different levels of power.
The stages are drawn in 3D, and unlike most fighting games, many steps have numerous screens. The player can move between these screens by kicking the opponent out of the current screen, resulting in a location shift.
The following modes are included in most versions: Story Mode* – the player follows a prescribed manner; just a few of the characters can be controlled.
The arcade game is a one-person game in which the player battles the AI in ten matches.
Versus Mode is a two-player game that allows for one-on-one combat.
Survival Mode is a one-person game in which the player tries his skills against an endless sequence of foes, attempting to achieve as many victories as possible while only having one life bar.
The GameCube version has two unique modes: Team and Practice, and the Xbox version includes an additional stage and the opportunity to play as Pyro.
