After hitting the jackpot with the two preceding installments of Call of Juarez, the folks over at Techland Studio in Wroclaw found themselves at a creative crossroads. Which way should their prized franchise ride next? The decision to gallop away from the well-trodden trails of the classic Western towards a contemporary narrative might have seemed risky. But they bravely did it, keeping alive the heart and soul of the series by reinvigorating the best elements from earlier editions and augmenting them with enticing new features like multiplayer mode.
A STORY THAT CAPTURES YOUR ATTENTION
The narrative in Call of Juarez: The Cartel is a gripping ride of a war against a formidable drug cartel. In the aftermath of a devastating bomb attack on an American law enforcement facility, it becomes painfully evident that the cartel has managed to infiltrate federal agencies. An elite unit consisting of Kim Evans, Eddie Guerra, and Ben McCall is mobilized to counter this looming threat. Each carries their baggage – a former street gang member, a gambling-addicted DEA agent, and a hard-nosed LA cop with a lineage tracing back to Ray McCall of Call of Juarez fame.
A CROSS-COUNTRY HUNT
Our protagonist trio’s mission is to capture the elusive cartel leader, a journey that takes them across California, Arizona, and New Mexico, culminating in Juarez in Mexico. Their unique motives and personal issues allow players to view the unfolding drama through diverse lenses, and their choices influence the game’s ending.
AN ARRAY OF EXCITING MISSIONS
The main campaign dishes out a buffet of diverse missions. Engage in high-octane police raids, protect valuable witnesses, conduct undercover operations, and partake in adrenaline-fueled car chases. All this action is deeply rooted in the Western-inspired FPS tradition of Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
AN EXPANSIVE ARSENAL AT YOUR DISPOSAL
Techland Studio ensures that players are never outgunned. The game’s armory is fully stocked from pistols to machine guns, sniper rifles to anti-aircraft missiles. But if guns aren’t your thing, take the old-fashioned route with some good ol’ fisticuffs, or strategically use cover fire and flank your enemies. The game even introduces a concentration mode that slows time, enabling cinematic takedowns.
YOUR HERO, YOUR CHOICE
Before embarking on the campaign, you can select your character – one whose perspective you’ll experience the game from. The narrative paths of these characters often intersect, providing a well-rounded view of the unfolding events. Co-op enthusiasts can breathe easy; the game supports a three-player cooperative mode, adding an extra layer of camaraderie and strategy.
COMPETITIVE MULTIPLAYER FUN
And if all these features weren’t enough to keep you hooked, Call of Juarez: The Cartel offers a competitive play mode where players are split into two factions – the police and gangsters. Whether you’re laying down the law or causing mayhem, this mode promises intense, high-stakes multiplayer action.
