In contrast to most of the Final Fantasy titles, Dissidia is primarily a fighting game rather than a traditional role-playing game. However, the intricate tale, character advancement, and personalization options are still there. The game includes protagonists and antagonists from previous installments of the Final Fantasy series, with two characters from each installment appearing in total. The conflict between the two gods, Cosmos and Chaos, drives the story’s action. The protagonists will band together to create teams to overcome Chaos’ army and retrieve their crystals. These teams will then go on to fight through Chaos’ armies. Each character has campaign must be completed before a crystal may be obtained at the end of the story.

In addition, this game has a single battle mode and an arcade mode. In a single-fight manner, the player gets to choose both his fighter and his opponent; however, in the arcade mode, the opponent is selected for them automatically by the game. All of the experience and abilities that the character gains throughout the campaign are carried over to the other game modes (and vice versa; for instance, if Cloud had a level equal to 12 when he finished the campaign, he would also appear to have the same level when viewing him in the character roster in Arcade or Quick Battle mode).

One further perk of this game is that the player gets to keep all of the stuff they find throughout the story mission. This indicates that you can transfer things from one character to another. Additional material, such as villains, costumes, and other items, are also included in the game and can be acquired by spending PP. You gain such points for every battle you win and every campaign you finish.
