The works of M.C. Escher served as inspiration for the game design of Echochrome, which is a puzzle game. The user must utilize five simple rules of perspective to combine pathways and hidden threats and create a path to reach the “echoes,” which serve as checkpoints in the game. The gameplay is centered on optical illusions, and the player must do so to progress through the game. This suggests that different actions are available depending on the camera perspective, which changes when the user spins the camera. The player can change the camera perspective by using the analog stick.

There are two distinct iterations available for the Sony PSP. The UMD game features 105 levels, each of which can be played in one of three different ways: Solo mode, in which the player navigates a lone mannequin, Pair mode, in which the player controls a white and black form; and Others mode, in which the player navigates a solitary figure, but with the addition of black adversaries. Echochrome Micro is the name of the version available in the PlayStation Store. There are just 56 levels available across all three game types.

Every version comes with its editor already installed. Through the PlayStation Network, players of the PS3 can effortlessly trade levels with one another. The system will also automatically download ten user-created puzzles, up to a maximum of 300, that have received good ratings from other users. Once the maximum number has been achieved, the older ones are swapped out with newer ones.
