The iconic arcade frog from the 1980s returns in this 3D iteration of the top-down platform genre as the protagonist of Frogger: Helmet Chaos. The frog advances one (invisible) square for each critical push, which keeps the feel of the original arcade game rather than the newer, smoother movement techniques featured in more recent video games. The core gameplay is still the game.

When Frogger returns from climbing a tree to fetch some moon fruit for Toady, he finds that his pal has disappeared. He follows his footprints and discovers that Toady is under the influence of Dr. Wani, who has instructed his mini-crocs to place mind-control helmets on all of the population of the land. He finds out this information by following his footprints. Frogger is the one who needs to undo this.

The game is divided into various short levels, each with a puzzle. It takes one square to move Frogger in any direction but two courts to perform a standard jump. The most common application for this feature is finding one’s way through water-filled labyrinths. When Frogger comes into contact with water, he tragically drowns. While he is traveling around, he has the opportunity to collect coins, and some checkpoints allow him to store his progress. He can use his tongue to push or pull things, and he can even use it to swing from branches. In addition, he can perform a vertical jump, which allows him to grab items that are in mid-air, and he can turn around by ninety degrees to face a different direction. The frog only has a certain number of lives, but if you pick up an apple, you can restore one of those lives.

The narrative is continued on the PSP through illustrated cut-scene segments that feature static pictures and voice-overs; on the DS version, the report is exclusively written. While the top screen of the DS version displays the game statistics while you are playing the story mode, the PSP version allows for the sharing of games. In addition, there are seven minigames, including a reimagined version of the classic arcade game Frogger with updated graphics, as well as hats and costumes that may be unlocked with the coins you earn.
