Killzone Liberation is the follow-up to the PlayStation 2 game Killzone. You play as a Templar again, two months after the previous game’s events, this time taking the war to the Helghast. Previously, the ISA could beat them back, but they have reorganized, and you must battle the crafty General Metric, who has captured most of southern Vekta in 16 missions.

The top-down/third-person perspective, as opposed to the PS2’s first-person pure FPS style, is new to the franchise. You can switch to a tactical overview during the action to plan your activities. The screen zooms out, the actions slow down, and icons appear to show the various activities and objectives. You will occasionally fight alongside Rico, a soldier to whom you can issue commands and commandeer vehicles. You must place explosives, sabotage installations, rescue captives, and infiltrate military areas to complete the tasks. A significant quantity of auto-aiming simplifies aiming, but the game provides many simultaneous adversaries appearing in return.

You can personalize your character with points before each assignment. Before each new job, up to three upgradeable abilities can be adjusted to carry more ammo for specialized weapons or deal more damage. These points can be gained during challenge missions in which you must demonstrate your shooting skills or do activities such as disarming mines in a restricted amount of time.

The game has a full range of Ad Hoc multiplayer options and co-op and competitive play modes such as Deathmatch, Assault, and Capture the Flag for up to six players.
