Ridge Racer 2 is not so much a sequel to the early PlayStation Portable title Ridge Racer as it is an update of the existing game that offers various enhancements and a lot of additional material. Ridge Racer 2 was released as Ridge Racer 2 for PlayStation Portable. A new computer-animated movie plays both before and after the main game in Ridge Racer 2, released approximately a year after the first game in the series.

- New SPECIAL class vehicles with which to compete and triumph in duels.
- Survival mode is a four-car race, and at the end of each round, the driver of the vehicle that finished in the lowest place is taken out of the competition.
- Duel mode: A race against a single AI car.
- Arcade mode has taken the role of Single Race mode. In this mode, the player competes against a pack of 11 vehicles and needs to achieve checkpoints on the circuit to continue playing. A new option to change the level of challenge in the Arcade mode has been added to the menu of available options.
