Ushinawareta Suna no Miyako Kefin, the fifth entry of the Japanese action RPG series, is a direct sequel to Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. The player takes control of the series’ main character, adventurer Adol Christin, on a new adventure. Adol’s ship has been assaulted, and he has gone unconscious. After some time, he awakens on a beach, saved by the Rehda, elf-like people who reside in a small community. Soon after, he becomes involved in a quest for a mystery wealth hidden someplace on surrounding islands, and he must contend with an ambitious imperial officer who will not tolerate any competitors on his hunt.

The Ark of Napishtim is an action role-playing game set in an entirely 3D world for the first time in the series. The continuous game environment features overworld sections connecting dungeons and settlements. Much of the game is set in dangerous environments, with the protagonist engaging in fast-paced action battles with regular foes and monsters. Like its immediate predecessor, the game abandons the earlier installments’ “bumping” fighting technique in favor of more frequent active combat. Adol can perform standard strikes and jumps and combine those abilities to perform upward, and downward slashes, dash attacks, and longer jumps. Experience points and money are rewarded for defeating foes, and leveling up is automated. Armor and accessories can be obtained or purchased in treasure chests.

During the game, there are only three swords, each representing a different element. Each blade comes with another magic spell. These swords can be leveled up in a specific workshop by spending blue crystals called “emel” that foes drop. As the blades level up, their attack power grows, as do their magic spells, which acquire levels and become more devastating.
