Need for Speed: High Stakes is an action racing game with a large selection of exotic sports cars and a variety of tracks, just like its predecessors. Players can still compete in the series’ iconic Hot Pursuit mode game mode, where they race other players on tracks with regular traffic and pursuing police cars. Getaway and Time Trap are two additional modes that are added to the traditional pursuit mode. In Getaway, the player must escape the police in a predetermined amount of time, or if they are playing as the police, they must catch a speeder before the timer expires. In Time Trap, the entire race must be finished before the timer expires, or the police must detain every speeder. For this game mode, there are a few minor variations between the two platforms in terms of spike strips, road blocks, and backup. For instance, the latter is exclusive to the PlayStation version. Players can choose to race against one another or take opposing sides in the multiplayer version of the Pursuit mode.
The Career mode with its own set of difficulties is a first for the series. By defeating these, you can unlock trophies and earn money for upgrades, new cars, and other purchases. The Career mode on the PlayStation is divided into the Tournament (required races) and Special Event (optional races) challenge sets. The races where players bet their cars are referred to as High Stakes in the title. When a player owns more than two cars, this is a feature of the Career mode in the PC version. Two players can insert their memory cards and compete against one another in the PlayStation version. The car belonging to the loser is immediately removed from their memory card and given to the winner.
In addition to the new game modes, this installment of the series is the first to feature intricate physics models. For the first time ever, damage now has an impact on the car’s appearance and functionality.
