The racing game DiRT 2, like its predecessor, does not merely focus on perfectly reproducing the Rallye-sport, as previous versions of the Colin McRae-Series did. Instead, the player will face eight different types of offroad activities during the primary campaign, dubbed DiRT Tour:

Rallye – The player must race to the finish line as quickly as possible. He is the only one on the track simultaneously, so he must navigate hairpin corners and rough terrain.
Trailblazer – Similar to Rallye, however, this mode has long and open stages instead of restricted tracks.
Raid – Races over broad open terrain with numerous perilous shortcuts that allow the player to gain distance from the other drivers.
Landrush – All drivers begin simultaneously, and the tracks are riddled with insane curves and leaps.
Rallycross – This sport is played on round courses of dirt and asphalt roadways.
Gatecrasher – The player only has a certain amount of time to reach the finish line. To restore that time, so-called gates are positioned across the track, each granting +2 seconds upon demolition.
Domination – The tracks, like Rallye, are organized into sectors. Each sector awards 1-10 points according to how quickly the player completes it compared to his opponents. In addition, after he crosses the finish line, 1-10 points are added to his final position in the race. The driver with the most points wins.
Last Man Standing – As the name suggests, the goal is to race around the circuit and be the last car standing at the conclusion, with the previous vehicle removed after each lap.
Each event necessitates the purchase of a new car or, at the very least, a race pack for that car, both of which are purchased with the money earned through winning these events. Each automobile may be customized visually and mechanically, with parts unlocked as you go through the levels. Experience points are granted for accomplishing missions such as jumping across the finish line or completing a race without damage. The story of difficulty determines the amount of money earned at the end of each race. The greater the challenge, the greater the prize. Furthermore, the difficulty level affects the number of flashbacks available for the race (from five to none). Flashbacks allow the player to rewind the action for a few seconds when he makes a mistake or crashes, allowing him to try that portion again – ideally without repeating the same error.

The game includes several real-world racers, with their voices and cars, who offer suggestions to the player during the DiRT tour and additional challenges such as duels and time trials. They’ll also participate in team events with the player if he doesn’t smash into them too often during races.
