Aegis Wing is a shooter with a side-scrolling perspective initially developed by three interns working for Microsoft. In titanic fights against endless extraterrestrial opponents, the player steers a little ship through the action. Every battle takes place against a static background that scrolls in 3D. However, the player may occasionally be required to evade mines and other obstacles that have been strategically placed at critical spots. There are bosses after some of the stages, and to defeat them, you will need to fire many shots.
The game also has a four-player cooperative mode, during which players can “attach” their spacecraft to the one now in control and transform into autonomous gun turrets that can rotate in all directions. Arcus Missile, Hades Beam, Gorgon Burst, and Lambda Shield are the four super weapons that the player can acquire as a reward for completing missions and destroying foes.
