Alan Wake is a cinematic action game with heavy survival horror themes told in several episodes. The player takes control of the titular Alan Wake, a famous detective writer attempting to escape the pressures of creative expectations in the fictional town of Bright Falls. However, Alan’s wife will soon vanish, and he will be confronted with strange events that will force him to pick up a pistol and a flashlight. While Alan tries to solve the mystery he’s been drawn into, the story is recounted in six episodes, each concluding with a title screen and beginning with a review of previous events – just like a TV show.

Light is the most critical aspect of the game. Alan wanders and finds Bright Falls, with its town life and woodlands, as well as an in-game radio station and many TV stations, during the game’s daylight periods. The dramatic and action-packed aspects of the fun begin at dark. At night, people and animals in the game transform into the most dangerous beings. They are enveloped in darkness, which alters them. They are known as Taken and are highly vulnerable when exposed to light, which is how you battle them. Alan’s primary survival gear is a rifle and a flashlight. Both gadgets change during the game, and Alan discovers better weaponry and powerful flashlights. Flashlights require batteries, which can be depleted quickly when he focuses the light into a stronger beam to dispel the evil influence surrounding people and things. Enemies can only be shot if the veil of darkness covering them is removed with light.

Alan is controlled in-game from a third-person perspective, and while carrying a gun, the game does not use cross-hairs. Because light is the primary focus in combat, Alan points at adversaries with his flashlight while the game gives aim assistance at the exact target. He can pick up more ammo and batteries, and there are a few puzzle components where he must interact with the surroundings to replenish power, for example. Healing occurs automatically by not receiving harm for some time, and there are also areas with lots of light where the animals cannot enter, known as safe havens. Their health is restored even faster. Many of the plot aspects are told in fragments from a basic timeline. For example, before the trip, the player will return to an apartment to discover more about his wife’s terror of the dark. Most of the time is spent exploring, with a few driving sequences thrown in for good measure. Other aspects of the story are told through the pages of a book Alan has yet to write. These are saved and frequently provide more information on past and forthcoming events. There are also several scripted incidents and chats with the locals. Similar camera viewpoints are supplied when shooting or dodging, with time slowed down for cinematic effect.
