Alien Breed 2: Assault is a sequel to the series reboot Alien Breed: Evolution, not the original Alien Breed 2. Though the “Chapter” names have been eliminated, Assault continues the tale begun in Evolution.
The assault begins with Chief Engineer Theodore Conrad’s effort to escape the alien-infested spacecraft, Leopold. Players move with the left stick and aim with the right, while ammo conservation is considerably more critical than other dual-stick shooters. The major gameplay update in the sequel is an upgrade system that allows players to buy weapon upgrades and inventory items at stations scattered throughout the levels. Escort missions play a more significant role in which the player must defend an A.I. partner as they unlock doors or barriers. New weapons (Hyper Blaster and Rocket Launcher) and Breed types are also introduced.
The story of Assault is spread across five levels. Completed levels can also be replayed independently in “Free Mode,” with participants attempting to beat their previous high score. In addition, the game includes an online or offline co-op campaign with updated maps and a new story that intersects with the solo campaign. The sequel also has a unique “Survival” mode, which can be played solo or in co-op and pits players against hordes of charging enemy A.I.
