Alien Breed: Evolution, based on the original Alien Breed, tries to reinvigorate the top-down shooter franchise.
Evolution employs a 3D engine and an isometric view to follow the player’s hapless spaceman as he attempts to leave his damaged craft while aliens swarm around him. While the gameplay of killing aliens, finding keys, and avoiding dangers remain the same, Evolution is a dual-stick shooter, unlike the previous titles. The left stick directs movement, while the right post directs aim.
This episode’s single-player campaign spans five levels, with the option of online or offline co-op play. To defeat the “breed,” players must acquire six different weapons, which break out of the walls and floor and seek out the player depending on light, sound, and smell.
The Alien Breed: Impact update for Windows and PlayStation 3 is nearly identical. It has a new “Prologue” section, redesigned aliens, and a shop where you may buy improvements.
