The off-road racing video game called Baja: Edge of Control is modeled around the actual Baja 1000 race series run in California. The tracks are located in a desolate area, with more than a thousand kilometers of route to investigate. The primary goal of the leading career mode is to get a Volkswagen Beetle and compete in the lowest class of off-road racing possible. Players can win prizes, sponsorship money, and experience points by performing well in races, which allows them to purchase more robust machines and unlock higher classes. Because the sponsors’ logos need to be visible on the car when it crosses the finish line to collect the money for their sponsorship, the player will not be compensated if the vehicle sustains an excessive amount of damage. There are five different types of races, including circuit, which is a standard race where you do a few laps of a track against opponents, rally, which is a point-to-point time-trial; hill climb, which is precisely what it sounds like driving up a steep hill, and then back down, open class, which pits different categories of cars against each other with a handicap system in place to disadvantage the more powerful ones, and Baja, which is an endurance race lasting between 250 and 1000 miles. The Baja-style races can last from a couple of hours to several.
