BattleBlock Theater is a platform game that takes place in a 2D world. Following a violent storm, a group of friends sailing aboard the S.S. Friendship finds stranded on an unknown island. Every buddy has been locked up, except for Hatty Harrington, who has risen to the position of leader of the feline population of the isle. The objectives of each level of the game are provided in the form of tasks that are staged during a performance for the cats’ entertainment. The narrative is advanced through cutscenes, stick puppets, and narration.
The character that the player controls can run, jump, and fight. It is also possible to perform wall jumps, double jumps, and climb pipes in this game. The game focuses primarily on platforming, even while it is possible to eliminate foes using punches, kicks, firearms, and particular strikes during the fight. The game is divided into eight different worlds, each with its distinct concept and several stages. The game’s title alludes to the entire setting being constructed out of block-like elements. These have varying characteristics, such as the ability to vanish or become covered in ice, and there are also conveyor belts, bursting platforms, portals, catapults, elevators, and other similar mechanisms. In addition to them, there are opponents, lasers, sawblades, spikes, traps, and other hazards. The gameplay blends the tricky navigation of Super Meat Boy, in which there is little opportunity for error, with settings that incorporate smaller puzzle pieces and move more leisurely. You typically have to move bricks around to change the surroundings to solve puzzles. Each level contains a checkpoint at which the player character can respawn after being killed.
Gems can be collected to unlock 300 new characters, known as “prisoner friends.” Every character’s mobility and skills are a little bit different from one another. Completing a level requires the collection of three jewels, although there are always many more to be discovered. A yarn ball buried somewhere in each group can be used as a currency to bribe the guards and get better weapons.
In addition to the primary campaign, there are also 24 bonus stages, broken up into three groups for each world. In addition, the player can uncover secret collectibles and receive a medal for completing the level quickly (in addition to receiving an additional gem). The game has a level editor that allows players to create, tweak, and share their custom levels. Offline and online multiplayer modes are also supported, including cooperative and competitive play. There are several event game types, some invoinvolvingketball or King of the Hill.
