Before America launched the bomb on Japan, a team of commandos infiltrated a Japanese scientist on an island in the Sea of Japan. He was developing a secret weapon known as Aurora. However, before the commandos could escape, Japan activated Aurora and killed everyone.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is set in the present day, following the events of Battlefield: Bad Company. Privates Preston Marlowe, Terrence Sweetwater, George Haggard, and Sergeant Samuel Redford of B-Company, often known as Bad Company, are deployed behind Russian enemy lines to secure Aurora-related equipment. Even though they escaped Russian soldiers and completed their ostensibly final assignment, the device turns out to be a forgery. As a result, Army General Braidwood appoints them to a special mission to halt Aurora.

The single-player game is relatively linear, putting the player in the shoes of Private Preston Marlowe and sending him off to explore the secrets surrounding Aurora in conventional first-person-shooter fashion. On the side of the other members of Bad Company, the player attempts to complete the missions’ goals while gunning down dozens of foes with a massive arsenal of real-world military equipment but is limited to only carrying two primary weapons and a side-arm simultaneously. Throughout the game, the player acquires additional weapons by discovering them during his missions, enabling him the option to equip them at every supply drop from then on.

The basis of the game, like in previous iterations of the Battlefield series, is class-based and team-based multiplayer for up to 32 players, organized into squads of four men each. There are four game modes: Rush, Conquest, Squad-Rush, and Squad-Deathmatch. Each level can also be played on “Hardcore” difficulty, which turns off the cross-hair, mini-map, and other features. The four modes are described in detail below:

Rush needs both Russian and American teams to defend or destroy mobile transmitters. When the attacking team successfully destroys one of the transmitters, the battlefield is extended, and the conflict moves on to the next transmitter.
Conquest is all about taking and holding flags once more.
Squad-Rush pits two squads against each other for control of two mobile transmitters.
Squad-Deathmatch puts squads against each other, with the team with the most kills winning.
There are four classes: Assault, Engineer, Medic, and Recon. Each class has a unique arsenal of weapons and gadgets. While the Engineer uses his repair torch to repair tanks and other machinery, the Medic utilizes his Defibrillator to resurrect fallen team members and save a ticket. By leveling up, each class gains access to new weapons and equipment. Players earn experience points for killing people, collecting flags, completing missions, and achieving goals such as killing 7 adversaries in one round with a light machine gun. If the player interacts with one of his present squad mates, he earns more points. With these experience points, the player can level up his class to acquire new items and his overall rank.

Although the game heavily focuses on infantry, vehicles such as bikes, tanks, and helicopters are available in battle. Tanks are crucial for taking full advantage of the Destruction 2.0 feature, allowing players to take down entire buildings with adequate firepower. The health system combines the use of med-packs with intuitive healing. If a player dies and isn’t resurrected by a Medic, he can respawn at a fixed location, such as the home base or captured flags, or use one of his squad mates as an entry point.
