You are Lt. Henry Walker, a young Navy officer stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1941. You are late for duty and on your way to your ship when the Japanese assault and sink it. Now you must first assist in defending the harbor before leading the fight to the Pacific’s last battle near the Midway Islands.
In the single-player campaign, you can only control the ships, submarines, and planes provided by the game. Still, in multiplayer matches, you can jump into anything that moves and isn’t already owned by another player. So you can fly a plane, command a ship, or take on the enemy underwater with a submarine whenever you wish. Because there are several types of boats, from Torpedo Boats to Destroyers to Aircraft Carriers and planes such as the F4F Wildcat or the SBD Dauntless, you have various options and armaments. You can assemble squads of airplanes, set targets, and launch them on an Aircraft Carrier, for example, which only has AA weapons. If you currently control a ship, you can also go to the tactical map, assign formations, issue instructions, etc. Alternatively, instead of relying on the AI or other players, simply hop inside a vehicle and do everything yourself.
The single-player mode also includes three challenges, one for each vehicle type. Each mission inside a challenge places you in difficult conditions you must overcome. For example, the first mission in the ship challenge puts you in command of a Japanese battleship that has been ambushed and must flee while US destroyers approach its position.
