Castle Crashers is a side-scrolling beat-em-up in which knights must recover a stolen gem and many princesses for their monarch. Players can initially choose from four distinct knights with varied fighting tactics, as well as the alien from Alien Hominid, in a hand-drawn manner similar to that shown in Alien Hominid. Other characters (20) are unlocked or found as the game progresses. Although the game may be played by a single player, both offline and online, cooperative game modes allow up to four players to fight together on the same screen. Certain characters can only enable or interact with Some levels’ aspects.

Beginning with fundamental moves, beating adversaries fills an experience meter (up to 99 levels) that grants skill points. These are ascribed to strength, magic, defense, and agility, and as a result, they open a plethora of new moves and combos. Jumping, a light, strong strike blocking, and magic are all examples of basic movement. While playing, there are 40 different weapons to collect (including ranged weapons like a bow), each with a unique set of properties. Only one weapon can be wielded at a time, although all discovered weapons are kept in a blacksmith’s shop. The many levels are depicted on a map, which the player can roam around and return. Some are restricted until the player reaches a certain level of strength. There are also shopping places where life potions and new weaponry can be purchased. When characters are captured, they can also move about on mounts such as lizards.

Animal orbs are another element. They appear in the game and serve as friends, assisting the player with attacks, defense, or special powers such as digging up hidden items in the stages. Like all The Behemoth games, the game design and animations are centered on zany comedy. After conquering a boss, the knights must fight against other to win the princess’ kiss when playing with additional players.

Aside from the main game, there are arena battles against more challenging waves of foes and the All You Can Quaff mini-game, in which players must button-mash to eat as soon as possible. There is a lot of replayability, thanks to the diverse playing styles of the characters.
