In the alternate past of Commanders: Attack of the Genos, humanity discovered the mysteries of the atom in the early 1900s. The discovery of gene manipulation resulted in the development of perfect beings who were more robust, quicker, and smarter. These new humans were dubbed the Genos. Soon after, ordinary humanity chose to revolt, resulting in genocide. After a period, a peace deal is struck, but the human nations are expanding their military at the start of the game. A young commander, Alec Falcon, is out training his troops in this setting when he receives a distress call from a scientist. The Genos is coming for you, and it’s up to you to lead Alec and his warriors into combat.
Commanders: Attack of the Genos is a tactical strategy game played in turns. To complete each level’s objectives, the player must command several forces. Each subunit has a set number of points that can be used to perform various tasks, such as moving, attacking, and capturing buildings. The geography of each stage influences unit movement and defense. For example, units have less protection but can advance farther each round when standing on an open road or path. Air units are required to cross rivers and ridges. The teams might be light or heavy. Light units are less expensive and can travel further, but heavier units are slower and more expensive but have more firepower. There are also artillery units that can launch long-range attacks. Air units can travel long distances and are only assaulted by anti-air units. Each team has its own set of strengths and limitations. Therefore it will be more effective against some units and less effective against others.
Each player has a commander unit. Each commander has a unique ability that impacts neighboring units. Passive skills such as increased defense, damage, and healing are continuous. Active powers also require the Active Power bar to be filled. They can damage, heal, or freeze adjacent units for one turn.
Infantry units can be used to conquer buildings. The player must construct capitols, industries, and airports to generate units. The player will find bonus tokens that can be collected throughout each level. These can provide benefits like additional health, money, or experience, but they can also explode and cause damage.
After each level, the player will receive a score of one to five stars. This grade is based on how many rounds it took to accomplish the story, how many enemy units were destroyed, and how much damage the player took compared to how much he gave.
