Dance Central is a rhythm-based club dance game that debuted alongside Microsoft’s Kinect sensor. The Kinect tracks players’ entire bodies and grades them on accuracy as they attempt to recreate various dancing routines performed by virtual dancers on screen. There are 32 tracks on the disc, with more available as DLC.

The player’s overall performance is assessed on a five-star scale, similar to Rock Band. With consecutive faultless moves, players accumulate a score multiplier. If the player loses sync with the dancer, the non-matching body part of the virtual dancer blinks red. The player cannot fail a song; stars only reward new venues or clothes for the computer dancers. All pieces are accessible from the start.

The current and next moves are indicated by a sequence of dance cards along the right border of the screen. These cards, however, show the name of the action and a rough depiction of the movement, requiring the player to be familiar with the pattern. Unlike Rock Band or Guitar Hero, a player will find it challenging to enter a song cold and merely react to the cues. To help with this, a training mode called Break It Down will go through every song and routine in the game, showing the player the technique and then moving on once they complete it perfectly a few times. After three moves, the gamer connects what they have learned thus far.

Perform It, and Dance Battle are the other two modes. The player selects a song and then runs through the routine, rating and awarding stars based on their performance. Dance Battle is a multiplayer competition in which a piece is broken into back-and-forth sections. Each participant will execute their area before passing the floor to their opponent. The individual with the most stars and actual performance wins the battle.
