Dark Sector is an action game in which the player assumes the position of Hayden Tenno, an elite black ops agent dispatched to Lasria, a small country in the former Soviet Union. Hayden Tenno has been assigned to remove a virus that turns humans into mutants and eliminate Mezner, the virus’s creator.
Hayden becomes infected with the virus when he discovers Mezner. This causes his right arm to mutate, which in turn bestows upon him specific abilities, such as the ability to become invisible, to create shields, and most importantly, the ability to use the glaive, a unique knife-like weapon that Hayden can employ in both close-quarters and long-range combat.
Hayden can use weaponry such as shotguns and pistols in addition to the powers the virus bestows upon him. These firearms can be stolen from his adversaries or purchased on the Black Market, and they can also be customized.
In the multiplayer component of the game, there are two distinct game modes: Infection, in which one player takes on the role of a wholly mutated Hayden while the other players hunt him down as regular troops, and Epidemic, in which two teams, each with their own Hayden, compete against one another to eliminate the other team’s mutant. Both games are played simultaneously.
