Once upon a time, the Kingdom of Drangleic was a magnificent and prosperous land. However, strange occurrences led to King Vendrick’s exile, and the country became desolate, with lost souls inhabiting it. Meanwhile, a lone traveler is spotted near Majula. He’s looking for a cure for a dreadful affliction that’s forced him to forget his humanity and feast on the souls of dark entities. The Emerald Herald, an enigmatic woman, informs him that the Four Grand Souls must be collected to bring atonement to the traveler and the entire land of Drangleic.

Gloomy Souls II is a sequel to Dark Souls, featuring the same grey medieval fantasy background, albeit it is set in a new land and is not directly related to it in terms of story. The game’s gameplay principles are highly similar to those of its predecessor since it is a third-person action role-playing game with interconnected world exploration and a deliberate emphasis on the challenge. The majority of the fundamental components of the gameplay remain unchanged. Combat requires precision, timing, and avoiding and blocking moves that consume stamina. Defeating foes grants souls, which can be used at a special bonfire to manually level up the protagonist’s main qualities. Character creation is also available in the game, allowing the player to create the protagonist’s class, genre, and physical appearance.

The player character is cursed, and each death takes away his humanity, returning him to the last bonfire he visited. Unlike the previous game, leveling up can only happen at one blaze in the game; nevertheless, the player can freely teleport between all of the bonfires he has visited. Another distinction is the restrictions placed on resurrected opponents; defeated enemies will no longer reappear after multiple attempts after resting at a bonfire. Magic is given more significance, and foes’ strengths and vulnerabilities to specific elements are more prominent. In the game’s multiplayer mode, you can join covenants and participate in unique activities like dueling against one another and cooperative fighting.
