DiRT is the first Colin McRae racing game that does not only focus on the rally championship. Other offroad activities include buggies, jeeps, and trucks that have all been licensed by the manufacturers. Races are not necessarily held against the times of other drivers. However, up to eight cars may race on the same track simultaneously.
The main game feature is the career mode, in which you work your way up a pyramid of different stages with events ranging from standard Rallies to Crossover or Corr to Hill Climb. You get points and money by completing each event correctly. Cash is utilized to purchase new automobiles. While the amount of money is determined by selecting one of the five difficulty levels, the number of points is defined by your final event result; you receive a maximum of 10 points for finishing an event in the first place regardless of difficulty level. These points are required to access new possibilities in the current tier. If you have enough points, the following story will be unlocked automatically. Thus you don’t have to complete every race in a report to unlock the final event at the top. The difficulty level determines not just the other drivers’ strength but also the damage’s severity when hitting objects. Some events are divided into two or three races in which the damage is carried over, and the permitted sixty seconds of damage restoration is not provided after each subevent. The engine, turbo, exhaust, gearbox, bodywork, wheels, suspension, and cooling system are the essential parts that may be fixed, and the entire automobile can be cleaned.
All events include multiple licensed true-to-detail vehicles with comprehensive damage models. Before each tournament, each car can be modified in numerous categories, such as engine or suspension. You can customize the car’s appearance with dozens of premade kits to make it even more unique. There are also 182 distinct liveries and 46 different vehicles to acquire in the game.
In addition to the career mode, the game includes the classic Colin McRae rally mode, which consists of four championships in which you must prove your ability in various car categories, such as 2WD or Classic. You can do a time trial, a single event, or a single race.
