Dragon’s Dogma is an action RPG set in a fantasy environment with an open world. It is ruled by a massive dragon, whom heroes seek to defeat. After an army fails, a chosen one known as Arisen is determined to defeat the beast. The game begins several years before the events, with the Arisen pursuing the dragon. After the interactive tutorial phase, the dragon vanishes, only to reappear many years later to assault the fishing community Casadeis. The player begins as one of the common inhabitants, and they can customize their appearance. However, the character is murdered, and the dragon rips out the heart to consume it. Instead of dying, the surface is resurrected as the new Arisen. A vocation can then be chosen, which specifies fundamental characteristics, equipment, and talents. Fighter, Strider, or Mage are the options. These are then advanced into three hybrid classes, such as Assassin or Magic Archer. Completing objectives and defeating opponents earn you experience, which you can spend on skill points. A fighter’s ability to roll and duck, or a mage’s capacity to levitate, are examples of class skills that provide benefits outside of battle.

The player can explore the world and collect quests from NPCs. The battle is fast-paced, featuring a mix of blocking and other attacks in a hack-and-slash style. Giant monsters in Shadow of the Colossus must frequently be seized or climbed to reach and chop away at weaker portions. The character’s powers are further determined by numerous pieces of equipment, weapons, and apparel that can be looted, purchased, or earned. The player can form a party of up to three computer-controlled individuals known as pawns. These can be given entire orders and will, for example, hold adversaries until the main character finishes them. One is a primary pawn that the player can fully grow. The other two are engaged workers who are fired based on the scene because they do not get experience or level up. They can be hired from the Rift with rift stones and chosen depending on their abilities and occupation. In addition to the pawns provided by default, instruments generated by other players can be hired (optionally) over a seamless internet network.

On most occasions, many monsters travel and appear freely, resulting in dynamic confrontations with a constantly changing mix of foes. Monsters eventually reappear. Therefore regions can never be cleansed. There are big cities with their timetables, and the character can interact with them. There is also a love interest who is always a woman, regardless of the gender of the main character at the start. There is no multiplayer option, despite the pawn-party structure. However, it contains several opponents, such as the Ur-Dragon, who is too powerful for a single group to destroy. Instead, any harm done to the beast is permanent and shared across all logged-in game versions. As a result, it provides asynchronous cooperative gameplay with some persistence, similar to an offline MMORPG. The person who deals with the last hit receives the highest award, but everyone who participates gets a share.
