Dungeon Defenders is an action-oriented tower defense game. As in every tower defense game, the purpose is to repel enemy waves by constructing defense structures during fight pauses. However, in this game, four individuals are building those structures simultaneously, and the entire game is played from an over-the-shoulder perspective. The action components come from the fact that players actively fight against the creatures during the waves.
Of course, the construction requires money, which can be obtained from defeated foes or treasure boxes hidden throughout the stages. Aside from cash, there are weapons, gear, and armor to collect that improve the player’s stats, experience points, and level-ups. However, there is no incentive system for teamwork, and item distribution is based on the “first come, first serve” principle. Every player can choose between four classes with a unique set of powers. The game is mainly designed for cooperative play with other players, but there is also a story mode in which youngsters battle evil forces.
