Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon is the follow-up to the budget-friendly, B-movie-inspired Earth Defense Force 2017. The gameplay is once again chaotic, fast-paced arcade-style action with giant bugs, massive weaponry, and massive destructible environments. Players should expect a lot of bugs to be splattered and a lot of buildings to collapse.

Theme and Setting EDF: Insect Armageddon is set in New Detroit, which has become the focal point of a new violent extraterrestrial bug invasion. Players take to the city as one of four EDF troops, each with armor, weaponry, and peculiarities, similar to Crackdown. Aside from the bugs returning and attacking New Detroit, little is made of the story in the game, and players are part of a three-person team known as Lightning Alpha. A mission is considered a failure only if all three soldiers are badly injured. As long as one of them is still alive, he can resuscitate the other two and keep the action going.

Armor and Weapons Insect Armageddon has around 300 weapons, four armor classes, vehicles (such as tanks), and turrets. Before each stage, players select an armor class, and as they proceed through the game, they can collect experience and level up their armor, abilities, and weapons. The game has replay value because upgrades and knowledge are not shared. Your acquired knowledge and weaponry will only be available to the Jet armor if you choose it. This allows players to play through the game four times, optimizing each piece of armor.

When it comes to armor, there are four types: The standard class, the Trooper, has the most weapon possibilities and is perhaps the most flexible. As the name implies, the Jet can fly briefly but spends most of its time hovering just above the ground and employs energy weaponry. Tactical armor is a supporting class that includes deployable mines, turrets, and other features. Finally, the Battle armor is similar to a “man-tank” in that it moves slowly and begins with heavy weaponry.

Features

Whereas the previous game lacked an internet component but offered classic split-screen co-op shenanigans, Insect Armageddon has taken things to a more “modern” level. Two-player split-screen co-op is back, with an entire three-player online co-op campaign and a more extensive 6-player online survivor mode.

Aside from that, there are certain “modern gaming” usual bonus features, such as an art gallery, albeit, unlike many games, players do not need to access this one. The art gallery in EDF: Insect Armageddon is available right away.
