The human population is on the verge of extinction 150 years in the future. A war between humans and mechs has wreaked havoc on the Earth. Buildings are entirely overgrown with flora, while abandoned mechs roam the metropolis. The few survivors of the post-apocalyptic Earth are captured and sold as enslaved people. Monkey, a gifted strong human, and a woman named Trip escape from a slave ship. Monkey awakens after the pod they escaped in crashes to find Trip has placed a hacked slaver headband on him, which will deliver shock-waves of anguish to him if he disobeys her orders. The Trip has enslaved Monkey for one simple reason: she wants him to bring her home. If he does this, she will set him free. When asked why he doesn’t kill her immediately, Trip answers that once her heart stops, so will his. This sends them on a journey back to Trip’s hamlet, where they must become one as a team to survive in an uncertain future.

Ninja Theory’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a platforming action-adventure game. The player controls Monkey on his escorting assignment of Trip in the game. Monkey is armed with an extendable staff, which he employs in battle. As the name says, Monkey has acrobatic monkey skills that he uses brilliantly to climb poles and escape from foes. Combat is limited to Monkey’s staff, which may administer light or strong blows and fire plasma bullets. While Trip does not participate in the actual fighting, she can assist in various ways, such as distracting the attackers or even delivering a devastating EMP if assaulted. The Trip also employs a dragonfly camera, which searches the surrounding area for mechs and mines. If any are discovered, they will be displayed on the screen due to the programming in Monkey’s headband. Tech orbs that may be found strewn across the levels are used to upgrade. These include improving Monkey’s health, providing extra ammo for his staff shots, and learning new moves. Platforming features and level design are reminiscent of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

There are three difficulty levels to choose from. Playing on the most challenging difficulty may significantly boost enemy damage against you. The game includes a chapter choice mode that allows you to replay any previously completed chapters. This will enable you to replay stages to obtain additional orbs or acquire trophies/achievements that are only available in that chapter.
