Frédéric Chopin, the legendary 19th-century Polish composer, is the protagonist of Eternal Sonata. Chopin is on his deathbed when he has a weird dream in which he is transported to a fantasy world where things and people have musically sounding names. Chopin meets Polka, a magician on the run from her fate (because all magicians die young on her planet). Others join them in their mission to depose an evil nobleman. Chopin’s real-life events are depicted as analogies to what happens in his dream.

The game is designed in the spirit of Japanese RPGs, with a linear, character-oriented story arc and animé-inspired graphics. The gameplay incorporates aspects of traditional turn-based combat, strategy, and real-time battle. Each turn, your party has limited time to move a character across the battlefield and perform actions that take varying amounts of time based on their consequences. Light is vital during battles since characters’ attacks and spells alter depending on whether they are in the morning or the darkness.

The game’s musical score is composed of works by Frederic Chopin.
