Far Cry 3 is an open-world first-person shooter set in the Pacific on the fictional Rook archipelago. Although the tropical backdrop resembles the original Far Cry, the gameplay is more akin to Far Cry 2, with open-world exploration augmented with role-playing aspects like experience points, crafting, trade, hunting, and three skill trees.

Jason Brody is the protagonist, a daredevil on vacation in the Pacific with his two brothers and some pals. They land on a pirate-controlled island after taking a skydiving trip. When they attempt to flee, the pirate warlord Vaas captures them all and kills his older brother Grant. Vaas sarcastically provides Jason with 30 seconds to escape before pursuing him. Jason succeeds against all odds by jumping into the ocean. Dennis Rogers saves him and introduces him to the Rakyat, a native group hoping to clear the island of pirates. During the hunt for the last survivors, Jason will be introduced into the tribe’s mystique, investigate the environment, and hunt down Vaas. After the introduction, the player can abandon the main goal and explore the islands at his own pace and leisure, as the playable regions areare immediately open.

A rook archipelago is a scary place full of pirate villages and native wildlife, including tigers, bears, sharks, komodo dragons, boars, goats, snakes, rabid dogs, etc. It is divided into portions that are gradually disclosed when a radio tower in the sector is taken over. These show the entire environment and unlock missions. However, locations can also be explored without a detailed map. There are numerous safe homes to visit and trade loot at multi-purpose vending machines. Players can kill pirates and fulfill tasks but harvest flora and seek animals’ skin. Money is used to purchase weapons, modifications, and syringes, but crafting is also crucial. Plants may be transformed into fluids that can be injected to improve skills by discovering recipes.

Furthermore, animal skins are utilized to make things that boost Jason’s weapon belt to four slots, provide a larger wallet to keep money, expand his ammo belt, and much more. Completing tasks and defeating pirates earns you skill points that you can spend on one of three possible skill trees. Heron is concerned with movement and long-range strikes, Spider with stealth and survival, and Shark with assault and healing. Jason gets a tattoo on his arm for each new skill he learns.

Even though it is a shooter with machine guns, assault rifles, handguns, bows, flamethrowers, mines, RPGs, and grenades, practically the entire game may be played in stealth mode. Jason can conceal himself by crouching and hiding in the foliage. A meter indicates how visible he is to his opponents. Sneaking up on them allows for sneaky takedowns with a knife and dragging bodies away. He can also utilize rocks and sounds to keep pirates at bay. His camera is used to zoom in on opponents and mark them. Once tagged, they remain visible through an outline even when walls or objects are in the way, allowing movement to be tracked. Animals can be treated in the same way. To get about, people walk, but there are also vehicles such as automobiles, jeeps, quads, boats, jet skis, paragliders, zip lines, and swimming.

If Jason decides to help the Indigenous, he can infiltrate and take over more than 30 outposts. Once these towns are cleansed, they become natives’ property and serve as a haven for swift transit and shopping. Every animal and character exhibits dynamic behavior independent of Jason’s activities. That way, he can see animals attacking one other or use it to his advantage to clear a group of adversaries, and after Jason clears an outpost, villagers will go out and capture new land on their own. Enemies roam the island on foot or in cars, acting erratically. When Jason is discovered, they frequently summon forces from another area to pursue him. Other ammo and weapons can be obtained from fallen adversaries, as well as money and valuables, as well as many secret loot chests and other collectibles such as letters from fallen troops during World War II and antiques. Weapons purchased can be re-acquired from the vending machine at no additional cost, even if lost or swapped during a quest. Weapons can be customized by adding scopes, laser pointers, silencers, and more ammo storage space.

Multiplayer comprises a distinct cooperative campaign for up to four players six months before the main game’s events. It takes place on a separate island in the Rook archipelago and stars four characters: a criminal named Callum, a corrupt detective named Leonard, a Russian hitman named Mikhail, and an ex-soldier named Tisha. They were working on a cruise liner to make amends for their previous crimes when they were duped out of their money by pirates. They end up on the island by pursuing them. The campaign is divided into six missions, each lasting around an hour and interspersed with cutscenes. The players often collaborate to get to a place, kill all adversaries, and then complete tasks like protecting equipment, obtaining specific ammo, or guarding another player. There is also experience acquired here, as well as multiplayer unlockables and custom loadouts. Competitive elements between players are also encouraged, such as getting the most sniper kills for an extra experience boost. Battle cry and booster systems are two more elements. Battle cries are short buffs that benefit nearby teammates, whereas boosters are stronger buffs delivered via syringes.

Team deathmatch, domination, transmission, and Firestorm are among the competitive multiplayer modes. Message and Firestorm are comparable to dominance. Information uses radio transmitters as control points, which can move around. During Firestorm, each side sets fire to two fuel dumps held by the other team while protecting their own. When a successful fire starts, the entire area is set in flames, and the teams must fight over a radio control point. Unlocking encrypted data with a time constraint yields additional multiplayer advantages and rewards. In these scenarios, players can also level up through a permanent system, employ battle cries, and booster systems, resurrect teammates, and summon help. Following each match, there are interactive cutscenes in which players can show pity or punish (murder) their opponents.
