Gatling Gears is a twin-stick shooter set in Greed Corporation’s Mistbound universe. The game puts the player in the shoes of Max Brawley, a former Empire walker pilot who joins the Freemen after the Empire goes too far in their hunt for raw resources.

The game’s campaign is divided into five chapters, each with five stages and a boss fight. The user controls Max Brawley and his two-legged walking tank at each level. The user controls the protagonist using the thumb sticks on the controller, one for walking and the other for directing the walker’s Gatling gun with endless ammo, as in other comparable top-down shooters. Max Brawley also gets access to two different weapons: grenades and rockets. They are activated by pressing the trigger buttons on the gamepad and are only available in limited quantities. However, they do refill over time. The player can also control the protagonist via the mouse and keyboard on the PC.

The levels consist of linear lines that the player must follow. The camera moves with the player and stops them from going back. On his journey, Max will confront numerous opponents who must be defeated and who will attempt to destroy the player. Infantry, rocketeers, tanks, walkers, train carriages, flying vehicles, and massive level monsters are among them. Buildings and plants can be damaged as well. Sometimes, the camera will remain stuck in place while the player must kill all attackers on the screen and all subsequent reinforcement before progressing.

Aside from the standard weapon arsenal, the player can gather additional power-ups such as the screen cleaner, health packs, and temporary enhancements for Walker’s guns. The player can also permanently enhance weapons and armor by collecting gold bars, which can be exchanged for merchant upgrades.

The player can strive to achieve a specific high score for each level. This is accomplished by collecting gears dropped by defeated adversaries. Killing foes while not losing health increases the multiplier for these gears, allowing for more significant scores.

The entire campaign may be played in cooperative mode with two players. Players might try to play more competitively in this mode because scores are stored separately.

In addition to the campaign, there is a Survival Mode with distinct maps whose goal is to survive as long as possible by defeating wave after wave of foes. The player(s) must defend important buildings from enemies in these areas.
